Computer Takeover Scams are on the Rise in our Communities

Computer Takeover Pop-Up Scam Alert

Please remain diligent and do not let down your guard when you are using your computer and/or your mobile device.

What is a computer takeover scam?  When a scammer tricks someone into giving them remote access to their computer/mobile device.  This can happen when the user clicks on a bad link or follows instructions on a fraudulent pop-up notification on their device.

Be on the lookout for:

  • Pop-up messages indicating your computer is infected or your personal information is at risk
  • Fraudsters may pretend they are a representative of “tech support”
  • Emails/text messages stating your account has been locked or reports of suspicious activity.

These red flags are typically followed with urgent action required by you.

The best advice we can give is to stop, breathe, DO NOT CLICK OR RESPOND TO THEIR URGENT REQUEST/DEMAND.

If you suspect you have encountered a pop-up, we recommend having your computer checked by a trusted professional.

If you clicked on, or engaged with a link/phone number/email – immediately:

  •  Disconnect your computer from your internet
  • Turn off your computer/mobile device
  • Contact your bank (from a different phone if your phone was compromised) and inform them of what happened
  • Change passwords from a different device
  • Take your computer and or mobile device to a trusted professional
